Anne Eglash MD, IBCLC, FABM, is a clinical professor with the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, in the Department of Family and Community Medicine. In addition to practicing family medicine, she has been a board certified lactation consultant since 1994.
Dr. Eglash is a cofounder of the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine, the Medical Director and cofounder of the Mothers’ Milk Bank of the Western Great Lakes, and the Medical Director of the University of Wisconsin Breastfeeding Medicine Clinic. She has published many peer- reviewed articles on breastfeeding medicine, has been the lead author on several Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine protocols, and is a member of the editorial review board for Breastfeeding Medicine Journal. She is the president of the Institute for the Advancement of Breastfeeding and Lactation Education (IABLE), and the cofounder and first president of the North American Board of Breastfeeding and Lactation Medicine.
She co-hosts and produces a breastfeeding medicine podcast series, called The Breastfeeding Medicine Podcast.
Katie Walsh MA, CCC-SLP, IBCLC, is a speech-language pathologist II at the Ann and Robert H Lurid Children’s Hospital of Chicago, with extensive experience working with critically ill inpatients as well as challenging dyads in the outpatient setting. She is a frequently invited speaker on topics related to infant feeding challenges and breastfeeding. She is also the education coordinator for Institute for the Advancement of Breastfeeding and Lactation Education (IABLE).

Dixie Whetsell MS, IBCLC, has been working with breastfeeding families for close to 30 years. As an IBCLC she has worked in a variety of settings including private practice, county and state public health programs and high risk maternal and pediatric hospitals. She has been teaching lactation training courses for more than 15 years and is currently an adjunct faculty member teaching in the Pathway 2 Lactation Training Program in the OHSU-PSU School of Public Health at Portland State University. She was a founding Board Member for Northwest Mothers Milk Bank, a HMBANA non-profit donor milk bank.
Lisa Gonzales BSN, RN, IBCLC, earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Linfield College. She started her nursing career as a Labor and Delivery nurse at a Level III OB hospital in 2006. After having her first baby in 2011, Lisa pursued lactation education and became an IBCLC in 2013. She made a full career change in 2015 to become a lactation nurse in a high risk maternity and pediatric hospital, providing inpatient and outpatient consults to growing families. In 2019 Lisa opened her private practice in Wilsonville, Or and currently provides feeding support to families in their home. When not doing home visits, Lisa is a full time mom to her 3 kids and can’t wait for them to go back to school in person in the fall.

Katrina B. Mitchell, MD, IBCLC, FACS, is a board-certified general surgeon, fellowship-trained breast surgical oncologist, and international board-certified lactation consultant (IBCLC) whose practice includes the care and surgery of women with breast cancer and benign breast disease. She also treats maternal complications of lactation, and has a special interest in pregnancy and postpartum breast cancer.
She resides in Santa Barbara, California and practices at the Ridley Tree Cancer Center at Sansum Clinic. She enjoys reading, traveling, and spending time with her son at the beach.

Karen Bodnar MD, IBCLC, FABM, FAAP, received her BS in Physics from MIT and served as an officer in the US Air Force. She then completed medical school and pediatric residency at the University of Florida. At UF, she also studied to become an Internationally Board-Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC). After completing her training, she spent 5 years in California where she worked in private practice and as an assistant clinical professor of general pediatrics at Harbor UCLA Medical Center.
In 2015, she relocated to Virginia and became a pediatric hospitalist, assistant clinical professor at Inova Children’s Hospital, and medical director of the Inova Breastfeeding Medicine Clinic. She is a fellow of both the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine, a past board member of IABLE, and a recent board member of ABM. She is a cohost on the Breastfeeding Medicine Podcast series.

Dr. Eglash is a clinical professor with the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, in the Department of Family and Community Medicine. In addition to practicing family medicine, she has been a board certified lactation consultant since 1994.Dr. Eglash is a cofounder of the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine, the Medical Director and cofounder of the Mothers’ Milk Bank of the Western Great Lakes, and the Medical Director of the University of Wisconsin Breastfeeding Medicine Clinic. She has published many peer- reviewed articles on breastfeeding medicine, has been the lead author on several Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine protocols, and was an associate editor for Breastfeeding Medicine Journal.

About the Instructors
Heidi Szugye, DO, IBCLC, FAAP
Dr. Heidi Szugye is a board-certified pediatrician, board-certified pediatric hospitalist, and international board-certified lactation consultant. She obtained her undergraduate degree at Case Western Reserve University and her medical degree from the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine. She completed her pediatric residency training at Cleveland Clinic Children's. After her chief residency year, she worked at Cleveland Clinic Children's for 8 years as a pediatric hospitalist in various settings, including the main campus, Children's Rehab Hospital, Hillcrest, and Fairview, where she took care of patients admitted to general pediatric floors and newborn nurseries. In the spring of 2022, she founded and became the Medical Director for Cleveland Clinic Children's Breastfeeding Medicine Clinic, which has served over 1,000 patients to date. She has participated in a number of research and quality improvement initiatives surrounding breastfeeding, been featured in several media and news features discussing breastfeeding, and presented locally and regionally on the topic. She is passionate about trainee and patient education, teaches PBL, and is a physician advisor at Cleveland Clinic's Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University. In her free time, she enjoys reading, running, and going on bike rides or walks with her husband, twin 8-year-old daughters, and 3-year-old son.Kam Lam MD, IBCLC, MPH, MS, FAAP
Dr. Kam Lam is the Assistant Medical Director of the Breastfeeding Medicine Clinic at Cleveland Clinic Children’s. She is an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. She completed her pediatric and chief residencies at University Hospitals Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio. She worked as a pediatric hospitalist at Cleveland Clinic Children’s attending deliveries and seeing newborn dyads before transitioning to her current role. In her teaching roles, she created the virtual breastfeeding elective for medical students and is the founding faculty co-lead of the World Medicine Pathway at the medical school. She is passionate in the areas of medical education, global health education, and decreasing health disparities in our community. She’s received grant funding and support for breastfeeding research, including train-the-trainer breastfeeding workshops for Black doulas and cost analyses of mastitis care.Registration

Patti James is a board certified neonatal nurse practitioner and IBCLC. She began her nursing career at Baptist Health Little Rock functioning for 20 years in NICU transport, education, and leadership roles. In 2000, because of her interest in neonatal feeding disorders, developmental care, and breastfeeding support for NICU families, she transitioned from the NICU bedside to assist with lactation program expansion. In 2010, she completed her NNP training at Baylor University. For the last 13 years, she has been a practitioner in the NICU, Special Care Unit, and newborn populations. She has also served as a Quality Improvement Coordinator for the NICU, and Lactation Consultant for inpatient and outpatient breastfeeding families. Patti is currently NICU staff at Baptist Health Ft. Smith.Courtney Massina BSN, RN, IBCLC
Courtney has been a Registered Nurse since 2008 with the entirety of her career in Maternal Child Health. 8 of those years specifically in the NICU and the other 7 years in Newborn and Postpartum Care. She has had skilled training and experience in lactation since 2009, with first completing a Certified Breastfeed Educator training and then certifying as an IBCLC in 2015. Her passion is to provide the knowledge families require to make informed feeding decisions and support their feeding goals in a collaborative and connected way. Throughout the span of her nursing and lactation career she has had the benefit of experiencing a diverse population of families as she has lived and practiced in several states. Currently, she resides outside of Houston, Texas with her husband and 3 children, and is practicing as an IBCLC in a Level III NICU.Sonal Patel, MD, CLE
Sonal Patel is a pediatrician, neonatologist, & breastfeeding specialist who founded NayaCare in 2018. NayaCare is a home health clinic focused on improving postpartum care. She has written several articles on this subject published in Scary Mommy, Kevin MD, and Colorado Sun. She wrote her first book, The Doctor and Her Black Bag that examines maternal mortality in historical and personal context and solutions to reduce maternal mortality. She is also a co-founder and co-executive director of Center for 4th Trimester Care, a national physician-led non-profit with the mission of improving postpartum care. She is a TEDx speaker: The Economics of the 4th Trimester.She developed her passion for maternal-infant health through her career and individual experiences. Her education has been centered on infant nutrition and its impact on infant development. Her passion is to empower mothers to achieve their own, individual breastfeeding goals.

Liliana Simon MD, IBCLC, FABM
Dr. Simon is a Pediatric Intensivist and a Lactation and Breastfeeding Medicine specialist; she is an IBCLC and a Fellow of the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine. She is a Pediatric Critical Care physician and a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore. This 1-hour course reviews contemporary options for birth control, as well as the current medical guidelines on contraceptive options during lactation, set by the World Health Organization and the Centers for Disease Control. Evidence for the hormonal effects on lactation is discussed. The lecture ends with a focus on shared decision making and equity regarding contraception during lactation.

Dr. Eglash is a cofounder of the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine, the Medical Director and cofounder of the Mothers’ Milk Bank of the Western Great Lakes, and the Medical Director of the University of Wisconsin Breastfeeding Medicine Clinic. She has published many peer-reviewed articles on breastfeeding medicine, has been the lead author on several Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine protocols, and has been an associate editor for Breastfeeding Medicine Journal.
She co-hosts and produces a free bimonthly breastfeeding medicine podcast series, called The Breastfeeding Medicine Podcast.

The maternal diet plays a limited role in the quality of breastmilk. This 1-hour webinar recording reviews the evidence on the impact of maternal foods, vitamins, and probiotic supplements on breastmilk quality. The hour also covers issues of maternal supplementation of vitamin D and calcium, both for her health and breastmilk composition.

It is NOT recommended for WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselors or those new to the field of breastfeeding support.
