New Mexico Breastfeeding Task Force
Breastfeeding families deserve advice and clinical care based on research evidence and professional consensus. It is well documented that families who receive care from breastfeeding knowledgeable physicians and other providers are less likely to wean prematurely. Our courseware is developed to provide evidence-based and clinically applicable materials that will elevate the level of knowledge and skills among healthcare providers, medical office staff, and other community supporters. Our course instructors are physicians who practice breastfeeding medicine.
The following provider education sessions are approved curriculum for the New Mexico Breastfeeding Task Force: Breastfeeding Friendly Clinic Initiative (BFCI). BFCI is an Endorsement program for outpatient health clinics to promote breastfeeding friendly practices as guided by major medical organizations, public health officials, and national guidelines. Objectives for BFCI include the following:
- • To increase the initiation and duration of chest/breastfeeding families in New Mexico
- • To improve postpartum care in New Mexico
- • To increase the number of clinics in New Mexico with immediate lactation resources
- • To improve health care provider education about chest/breastfeeding, lactation, & supplementation options
- • To promote chest/breastfeeding as cultural norm throughout clinic practices in New Mexico
Research studies demonstrate that breastfeeding families rely on guidance and recommendations provided by their healthcare team, and that physician/provider support has been shown to increase breastfeeding initiation and duration rates. In providing this free educational opportunity, the Task Force is dedicated to supporting the pivotal role that our physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants and midwives play in the support and management of breastfeeding families in New Mexico.
