The Core Content of Breastfeeding and Lactation Medicine Course is comprised of 30 individual sessions that are designed to comprehensively prepare physicians and other providers (physician assistants, nurse practitioners, midwives) to provide evidence-based anticipatory guidance and management of typical breastfeeding and lactation problems seen in primary care.
Overview:
This course, for physicians and other healthcare providers, covers the care for the breastfeeding dyad in the immediate postpartum period from delivery until hospital discharge. This course covers hospital practices that impact lactation, and the recognition and management of common challenges faced in the immediate postpartum period.
Objectives:
- Identify key practices that facilitate breastfeeding within the first hour after birth
- Describe the physiologic triggers that lead to secretory activation
- Explain how rooming in supports exclusive breastfeeding
- Identify how common newborn conditions can impact breastfeeding initiation

- The Golden Hour after birth
- The role of early and frequent skin-to-skin contact
- Safe positioning for skin-to-skin
- Infant-led attachment
- Benefits and evidence for the practice of rooming-in
- Secretory Activation
- Relationship between pacifiers and breastfeeding rates
- Relationship between early bathing and breastfeeding rates
- Management of common challenging situations including preterm infants, sleepy babies, neonatal hypoglycemia, jaundice, excessive infant weight loss, low milk production, and the non-latching infant
- Risks of nipple shield use
- Medical indications for supplementation in the immediate postpartum period
- Methods of expression and supplementation
- Engorgement physiology and management
- Supporting lactation during separation
- Preparation for transition home
Accreditation
CMEs: The AAFP has reviewed The Immediate Postpartum Period and deemed it acceptable for up to 1.25 Live AAFP Prescribed credits. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Nursing Credits: All state boards for nursing licensure approve of educational offerings that are approved by the American Nursing Credentialling Center (ANCC). Speaker Biography
Dr. Elizabeth Goetz is a Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Wisconsin Madison and is the Medical Director of the Newborn Nursery at Meriter Hospital. Dr. Goetz attended medical school at the University of Minnesota and completed a pediatrics residency at the University of Wisconsin. For over twenty years Dr. Goetz has been providing clinical care to newborns. Clinical and research interests include neonatal hypoglycemia, early onset sepsis, neonatal abstinence syndrome and early identification and prevention on congenital CMV. Dr. Goetz is a registered IBCLC and is actively involved with promoting and improving breastfeeding rates and experiences for women in Madison, Wisconsin.
