Overview
This 90-minute course involves reading 2 peer reviewed journal articles on the topic of ethics pertaining to breastfeeding and HIV, followed by questions pertaining to these articles.
Objectives
- Describe the risks and benefits providers must discuss with lactating parents who are HIV positive, including the risks of HIV transmission to the infant for a woman living with HIV with an undetectable viral load
- List ethical considerations that make shared decision making around breastfeeding important for people living with HIV
- Explain why breastfeeding by people living with HIV does not meet the criteria for criminalization
Accreditation
CMEs: The AAFP has reviewed Breastfeeding with HIV and deemed it acceptable for up to 1.5 Enduring Materials, Self-Study AAFP Prescribed credits. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
AAFP Prescribed credit is accepted by the American Medical Association as equivalent to AMA PRA Category 1 credit(s)™ toward the AMA Physician’s Recognition Award. When applying for the AMA PRA, Prescribed credit earned must be reported as Prescribed, not as Category 1.
