Overview

This 30-minute course will cover the Innocenti Declaration, the Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative, the Code of Marketing for Breastmilk Substitutes, contraindications to breastfeeding, and breastfeeding demographics in the USA. This course is part of a 5-day Comprehensive Breastfeeding Medicine Course for Physicians and Other Providers.

Objectives

  • Recite at least 5 of the 10 Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative steps
  • Describe the purpose and 3 important directives of The International Code of Marketing of Breastmilk Substitutes
  • Describe 2 characteristics associated with increased likelihood of breastfeeding and decreased likelihood of breastfeeding
  • Explain 3 relative contraindications to breastfeeding for the infant, and 3 for the mother

Accreditation

CMEs: The AAFP has reviewed Breastfeeding policies- Baby friendly hospital initiative, The code of Marketing for Breastmilk substitutes and deemed it acceptable for up to 0.5 Enduring Materials, Self-Study AAFP Prescribed credits. Term of Approval is from 02/14/2023 to 02/13/2024. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

AAFP Prescribed credit is accepted by the American Medical Association as equivalent to AMA PRA Category 1 credit(s)™ toward the AMA Physician’s Recognition Award. When applying for the AMA PRA, Prescribed credit earned must be reported as Prescribed, not as Category 1.

Speaker

Anne Eglash MD, IBCLC, FABM, is a clinical professor with the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, in the Department of Family and Community Medicine. In addition to practicing family medicine, she has been a board certified lactation consultant since 1994.

Dr. Eglash is a cofounder of the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine, the Medical Director and cofounder of the Mothers’ Milk Bank of the Western Great Lakes, and the Medical Director of the University of Wisconsin Breastfeeding Medicine Clinic. She has published many peer- reviewed articles on breastfeeding medicine, has been the lead author on several Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine protocols, and was an associate editor for Breastfeeding Medicine Journal.

She co-hosts and produces a breastfeeding medicine podcast series, called The Breastfeeding Medicine Podcast. Dr. Eglash is the founder and president of the Institute for the Advancement of Breastfeeding and Lactation Education.
